Istituto Motori, in collaboration with CRF (Fiat Research Centre), carried out the first experiments on the electronically controlled diesel engine with high pressure direct injection for automotive use, therefore with high rotation speed.
Particularities of the prototype are:
- the common rail injection system with rail pressure control, which remains constant during the injection phase, but which varies with the operating conditions;
- the electronically controlled multi-hole injector for direct injection into the combustion chamber. The evolution of the system has led to the multi-jet systems currently in use on the latest generation diesel engines.
